Chapter 3 - Mendelian genetics Flashcards
What is a character?
Any heritable feature that shows variation between individuals
What are traits?
Different forms of character
What is true-breeding?
An individual that always produces offpsring with the same form of character
What is hybridisation?
Crossing or mating two true-breeding individuals with different traits
What is a parental generation?
Original individuals
What is the F1 generation?
The hybrid offspring
What is the F2 generation?
Crossing 2 individuals of the F1 generation
What are monohybrid crosses?
Crosses that explore/examine one character
Alleles
Different forms of genes
What is a dominant trait?
That trait that appears in the F1 generation of monohybrid cross
It is determined by the dominantn allele
What is the recessive trait?
The trait that is hidden in the F1 generation
What is the law of dominance?
The recessive phenotype will always be hidden when there’s a dominant allele
Genotype
Combination of alleles inherited from parents
Phenotype
The physical appearance of character
Homozygous
Two copies of the same allele
