Mood Disorders
Psychological disorders characterized by severe or prolonged disturbances of mood
What are the major forms of mood disorder?
Depressive disorders (unipolar) Bipolar and related disorders (mood swing disorders)
What are the two major types of depressive disorder?
Major depressive disorder (more severe)
Dysthymia or persistent depressive disorder (less severe)
What are the two types of bipolar disorders?
Bipolar disorder (more severe) Cyclothymic disorder or cyclothymia (less severe)
Major depressive disorder
a severe mood disorder characterized by major depressive episodes. Absence of mania or hypomania
Mania
a state of unusual elation, energy and activity
Hypomania
a relatively mild state of mania
What are some common features of depression?
Changes in : emotional state motivation functioning and motor behaviour Cognitive abilities
What is the lifetime prevalence for major depressive disorder?
17% overall
21% in women
12 % in men
What effects can Major Depression have on a person’s ability to do everyday life?
Impairs their ability to function. Can cause loss of interest in usual activities, difficulty concentrating and making decisions and suicidal ideation
What is the most common psychiatric disorder worldwide?
Depression
What is the median onset age of depression?
30 years old
What are some risk factors in Major Depression?
Age (onset common in young adults)
SES (low SES at greater risk)
Marital status (separated/divorced have higher risk)
What are the DSM-V diagnostic criteria for depression?
5+ of these symptoms during a 2 week period:
- Consistent, daily depressed mood
- Loss of interest/pleasure in activities
- Insomnia or hypersomnia
- Significant weight loss or gain
- Psychomotor agitation or retardation
- Fatigue
- Feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt
- Diminished ability to concentrate/make decisions
- Recurrent thoughts of death, suicidal ideation or suicide plan

Subcategory of mood disorder involving major depression. Onset influenced by changing seasons
