What are some issues faced in diagnosing sexual and gender identity disorders?
- Determining dis-satisfaction with present functioning can be different
- Abberant acts don’t = diagnosis but no diagnosis doesn’t mean no treatment

What is the Sexual Response Cycle?
- Excitement phase
- Plateau
- Orgasm
- Resolution
What are Sexual Dysfunctions?
Persistent or recurrent problems with sexual interest, arousal or response. Diagnoses requires 6 mths w/ symptoms (75-100% of the time)
What the categories of Sexual Dysfunctions?
lifetime vs. acquired
situational vs. generalized
What percentage of people are affected by Sexual Dysfunction in their lives?
40-45% of adult women
20-30% of adult men
What is Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder?
- little or no sex drive
- marked distress
- ‘person just doesn’t feel like it’
- desire may occur in some situations but not others
What is Sexual Aversion Disorder?
- Extreme aversion/avoidance of all genital sex (deleted in DSM 5)
What is Erectile Disorder?
A sexual dysfunction in males characterized by difficulty in achieving/maintaining erection during sexual activity
What is Female Orgasmic Disorder?
SD involving marked delay in reaching orgasm or infrequency/absence of orgasm
What is Male Orgasmic Disorder (delayed ejaculation: DSM 5)?
marked delay in reaching ejaculation or infrequency/absence of ejaculation
What is premature ejaculation?
Characterized by a recurrent pattern of ejaculation occurring within about one minute of vaginal penetration and before man desires it. Affects 75% of men during at least one point in their lifetime.
Genito-pelvi pain/penetration disorder
applies to women who experience sexual pain and/or difficulty engaging in penetration
Vaginisimus
muscles surrounding the vagina involuntarily contract whenever vaginal penetration is attempted (incl. tampons, fingers, penis, etc)
Can’t be explained by medical condition so is psychologically connected
Dyspareunia
Genital pain associated with intercourse (not caused by lack of lubrication or vaginisiumus)
What is hypersexuality also known as?
sex addiction
