Sufficient space to make normal postural adjustments and allow animal to lie down, get up, turn around, and not contact feces or water. Area is twice the square of the height at the withers.
What should horses housed inside where they cannot graze be provided?
Fed and watered at least twice daily. Provided with roughage or other fibrous feedstuffs.
Describe horse castration.
Can be performed at any age, but surgical castration with anesthesia must be used.
What methods of euthanasia can be used for horses? What does this require? What methods can be used in emergency situations?
IV administration of pentobarbital or pentobarbital combination, gunshot, or captive bolt gun. Pentobarbital is controlled by FDA, only a DEA license holder or their designee can use. In emergency situations or if drugs are contraindicated, a gun or penetrating captive bolt gun can be used by trained personnel.
