what study investigated the long term effects of poor quality institutional care?Aim?
Rutter 2007
Aim- to investigate the short and long term effects of poor quality institutional care and privation on children social,emotional and physical development
what was Rutters method?
method- 165 romanican children placed in an institution form a very young age,usually received poor physical and emotional care
-these children were then compared to a control group of 54 uk children who were all adopted before 6 months old
how were the romanian children assessed?
assessed at 4,6 and 11 years of age on measures of social,emotional and cognitive physical functioning
what were the results of Rutters study?
- evidence of physical effects on the institution such as student growth and being underweight
- by 4yrs old the romanian children the were adopted before 6months appeared to catch up well,however the children adopted after 6 months showed poorer emotional care
what is disinhibited attachment?
where a child shows little fear of strangers
what was the conclusion of Rutters experiment?
there are negative effects of poor insituional care but these effects can be recovered if a child is adopted early enough
evaluation points of rutters experiment?
- major strength is that it gave a natural opportunity to study the major effects of institution care
- children came from a limited sample & we know very little about the chiders history before the experiment
what was Tizards aim ?
to investigate the impact of being raised in a home that provided good quality psychical care but poor emotional care
Tizards method?
65 romanian children were raised in a children home from 4 months old up tp 4yrs old and they were compared to a control group who had spent all their lives in their own families
results of Tizards study?
initial- the children in institutional care showed abnormal behaviours towards adults
later effects-95% showed secure attachment after 8 years to an adoptive mother
46% showed close attachment to biological mother after 8 years
