Chapter 4 Attachement Flashcards
What’s an internal working model?
Mental representations of the world+relationships that influence how we feel and behave (sometimes called scheme)
What did Bowlby hypothesise about internal working models?
That people with secure internal working models of relationships as a child will develop secure relationships as adults & the opposite got an insecurely attached
What evidence is there for the influence of early attachments on childhood relationships?
Myron-Wilson and Smith-questionnaire to assess the attachment type and bullying in 196 children aged 7-11
Results of Myron-Wilson and Smiths study?
Securely attached were least likely to be involved with bullying
Insecure avoidant = victim
Insecure resistant = bully
What evidence is there for the influence of early attachments on parenting?
Quinton 1984
Compared 50 women that had been raised in institutions to a control group of 50 women raised at home
Results of Quintons study?
The women raises in institutions had significantly more problems with parenting in comparison to control group
What evidence is there for the influence of early attachments on adult relationships?
Hazan & Shaver 1987
- Tested if there was a relationships between a childhood relationship and an adult one
- Conducted a Love Quiz on Over 200 men and over 400 women
Results of Hazan and Shavers study?
Positive correlation -those who has a secure attachment as children were more likely to show a secure pattern as an adult
-Securely attachment were more likely to have positive internal working models about romantic relationships
SUPPORTING BOWLBYS CONTINUITY HYPOTHESIS
What contradicting evidence is there for Bowlbys continuity theory?
Zimmerman et al
- Assessed the attachment type of 44 children using the strange situation and found the quality of relationships was related more to later life events that her than their early attachment
- Temperament may also be a variable as the social temperament makes it easier to have a secure attachment
What’s Bowlbys continuity hypothesis?
Early attachments create internal working models about relationships that continue to effect later relationships
