wellbeing
a state in which an individual is mentally, physically, and socially healthy and secure
mental wellbeing
a state of emotional and social health in which individuals can cope with the normal stresses of life, work productively, and contribute to their community
functioning
refers to how well an individual independently performs in their environment
* evident in observable behaviour when meeting the ordinary demands of everyday life
* underlying cognitions and emotions as they are considered critical to daily functioning

resilience
our ability to recover from adversity or tough times

the ability for an individual to form and maintain meaningful bonds with others, and adapt to different social situations
emotional wellbeing
the ability for an individual to appropriately control and express their own emotions in an adaptive way, as well as understand the emotion of others
emotional wellbeing
the ability for an individual to appropriately contorl and express thier own emotions in adaptive way, as well as understand the emotions of others

SEWB
one approach to understanding all elements of being and therefore wellbeing for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
- multidentional (has many dif components)
- holistic (considers the whole person)
SEWB framework dimensions
- connection to culture
- connection to country
- connection to spirituality and ancestors
- connection to body
- connection to mind and emotions
- connection to family and kinship
- connection to community
SEWB frameworks determinants
- social determinants: circumstances in which people grow, live and work
- historical determinants: the ongoing influence of events, policies, and trauma on groups of people
- political determinants: political policies that shape the process of distributing resources and power to individuals and communities, and create or reinforce social and health inequalities
mental wellbeing continuum
a tool that allows us to track fluctuating mental wellbeing
- ranging from high (functioning independently and coping with everyday demands of life) to low (distressed and unable to meet the demands of their environment for long periods of time).
mental disorder/ mental illness
can interfere with a person’s thoughts, emotions, perceptions, and behaviours, and disrupts normal function
