Chapter 8 Chemical Equations Flashcards
Strategies
1.start with the most complex compound
leave lone atoms for last
2.do not start with an element that appears in multiple compounds on the same side
3.often it is easier to balance polyatomic ions as a group
types of reactions
single replacement
A+BC—–> AC+B or BA+C
double replacement
AB+CD ——> AD+CB
combination
A+B…—->C
decomposition
A—->B + C +…
Combustion analysis
an analysis in which a combustion reaction is used to determine the formula of a compound of unknown formula
Stoichiometry
the relationship between chemical amounts. the coefficients in the balanced reaction provides us with the ration between those species. this allows us to calculate how much product can be produced or hoe much reactants are needed.
