Behavioral Categories (Coding Schemes) (Ethograms in Animal Research)
Include both the general and specific classes of behavior you are interested in observing
Frequency Method
Record the number of times a particular behavior occurs within a time period
Duration Method
The interest is in how long a particular behavior lasts
Intervals Method
Dividing your observation period into discrete time intervals and then record whether a behavior occurs within each interval
Time sampling
Scanning a group for specific period of time and then recording the observed behaviors for the next period
Individual Sampling
You select a single subject for observation over a given time period and record the observed behavior
Event Sampling
You observe only one behavior and record all instances of the behavior
Interrater Reliability
The degree to which two or more observers agree in their classification or quantification of behavior
