Chapter 8 Flashcards
A reaction where a precipitate forms
Precipitation reaction
Formation of a solid (precipitate); driving force for a chemical reaction
Precipitation
Substance were each unit that dissolves in water produces separated ions
Strong electrolyte
A solid that readily dissolves in water
Soluble solid
Only a tiny amount of the solid dissolves
Insoluble/slightly soluble solid
Positive metal ion in one compound combines with negative ion in the other compound and vice versa
Double replacement reaction
Shows the complete balanced formulas for the reactants and products
Molecular equation
Contains individual ions and gas, solid, or liquid form in a reaction involving aqueous solutions
Complete ionic equation
Ions that don’t participate in chemical reactions
Spectator ions
Contains the ions and gas, liquid, or solid formed but not the spectator ions
Net ionic equation
Reactants are an acid (H+) and a base (OH-); products are an ionic compound in water
Acid base reaction
Reactants are C and H2 compound and O2; products are CO2 and H2O; exothermic
Combustion reaction
Two reactants form one product
Synthesis reaction
Compound breaks down to form two or more substances; most are endothermic
Decomposition
One element takes the place of another in a compound (m/m or nm/nm); more active must replace less active
Single replacement reaction
