Contingencies of Reinforcement
Positive & negative reinforcement
Punishment & extinction
Positive reinforcement (most common)
occurs when positive outcomes follow a desired behavior. When employee receives some type of reward (increased pay, promotion, praise)
Negative reinforcement
occurs when an unwanted outcome is removed following a desired behavior. (manager removes task b/c you perform well at another aspect of the job)
Punishment
occurs when unwanted outcome follows unwanted behavior
Extinction
occurs when there is the removal of a consequence following an unwanted behavior
Schedules of reinforcement
Continuous Fixed Interval Variable Interval Fixed Ratio Variable Ratio
Continuous reinforcement
simplest schedule and happens when a specific consequence follows each and every occurrence of a desired behavior. Impractical (praise)
Fixed Interval
single most common form of reinforcement. Workers rewarded after a certain amount of time; length of time between reinforcement periods stays the same. (paycheck)
