What is a push factor?
things that cause a person to leave. (war, discrimination)
What is a pull factor?
Something that attracts people. (jobs, education)
What is voluntary migration?
A movement of people by their own free will.
What is involuntary migration?
A movement of people against their own will.
What is geopolitical migration?
Displacement due to civil strife creating refugees and internal displacement.
What is environmental migration?
Involuntary migration forced by environmental change.
What is legal migration?
when migration occurs within recognized government programs.
What is illegal migration?
Occurs when people sneak into a country or stay longer than their visas.
What is internal migration?
Migrating within a country.
What is brain drain?
Loss of highly educated people from a country because of emigration.
What is a remittance?
money send by a migrant to family members back home.
What are some challenges of integrating Immigrants?
Some countries reject multiculturalism. Locals believe immigrants take away their jobs. Qualifications and degrees of immigrants may not be recognized.
What is replacement migration?
migration to make up for an aging and declining population.
What are the 3 solutions to the refugee crisis?
- Voluntary repatriation-safe return home once danger is gone.
- Local Integration-link refugees with similar cultural groups.
- Third country resettlement- find a third country willing to take refugees.
What are some problems with the current refugee crisis?
Its hard to tell true refugees from people just trying to get into the country for economic reasons. Also most refugees have to live in refugee camps which suck at providing jobs and education.
