Chapter 10 Flashcards
What are the 4 types of hunger?
Famine, Starvation, Malnutrition and chronic hunger
What is famine?
severe short term shortage of food
What is starvation?
extreme hunger occurring over an extended period of time. (lack of nutrients in the body)
What is malnutrition?
a medical condition of having an unhealthy diet.
What is chronic hunger?
insecure supply of food
What are the 4 types of farming?
Subsistence farming, Cash cropping, Intensive farming, Extensive farming.
What is subsistence farming?
farming to feed the farmers families and selling any surplus locally.
What is cash cropping?
producing copious amounts of one or two products to sell locally and internationally
What is intensive farming?
small amounts of land with a lot of work to get a high yield
What is extensive farming?
large amounts of land where you don’t put in a lot of work but get a lower yield.
What is the green revolution?
large increase in crop production in developing countries achieved by use of fertilisers and pesticides.
What is biotechnology?
the application of biological processes to agricultural and industrial purposes.
What is genetic diversity? What is happening to genetic diversity?
Genetic diversity is disappearing since new hybrids are replacing original crops causing them to disappear.
What is the land reform?
The redistribution of land from large landowners to landless farm workers.
What is the role of women in food production?
they are usually responsible for food prod. in regions with the worst food shortage. By empowering them the food supply could increase.
What are the agricultural support policies?
Governmetn programs such as tariffs and subsidies and supply management designed to support and protect local agriculture.
What is monoculture?
Farming only one crop in an area. Has high yield but depletes soil nutrients and reduces biodiversity.
What is corporate farming?
the large scale production of food on farms owned by corporations, which are slowly taking over family farms.
How are we making agriculture more sustainable?
By farming organically (without pesticides and modified seeds) and reducing the distance that food travels between where its produced and consumed.
What does the future hold for agriculture?
could be used to produce biofuel, fair trade, food prices will likely rise.
