Chapter 8 Flashcards
Major categories of prods that contain caffeine and one product in each
Beverage, energy drinks, higher-caffeine energy drinks, high concentration energy drinks, caffeinated waters, foods, prescription medications, over the counter preparations
Discuss factors that contribute to the pattern of caffeine use by age in the US
Total caffeine consumption does not seem to vary by characteristics of people, except for age
Describe the drug experience associated with caffeine use. Explain how caffeine affects neural processing
Adenosine receptors are in the central and peripheral nervous systems. Adenosine leads to behavioral sedation, regulation of oxygen delivery to cells, dilation of cerebral and coronary blood vessels, and production of
asthma (Julien, 1996). Caffeine and the other methylxanthines occupy adenosine receptors and then block the action of that neurotransmitter.
Summarize how caffeine is absorbed, distributed, metabolized, and excreted from the body
Caffeine is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and is distributed throughout the body. Its half-life in the blood ranges from 3 to 7 hours. Caffeine is metabolized primarily in the liver and is almost entirely excreted in the urine.
Describe the symptoms of caffeine withdrawal
Headache, fatigue, depression, decreased alertness, less contentment, and relaxed mood, decreased activity and energy, greater sleepiness and drowsiness and increased irritability
Compare and contrast the acute and chronic effects of caffeine
The acute effects of caffeine include diuresis, stimulation of the heart and CNS, relaxation of smooth muscles, and stimulation of gastric acid
Chronic: high levels low conception, postmenopausal women and osteoporosis relation to serum cholesterol levels, decrease risk of dying from a variety of diseases (some chronic illnesses, parkinson’s dementia, heart irregularities, type 2 diabetes mellitus
Describe the diseases or conditions for which medications containing methylxanthine compound have been used in treatment
cardiac and bronchial asthma
remedies for headaches and colds.
help to counteract some of the side effects of medications for those ailments
Caffeine as well has been used in the modulation
of severe pain and in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease
