Chapter 8 Flashcards
Cell theory
- One or more cells
- Own structure and function
- Come from existing cells
Difference between prokaryotes and eukaryotes
Prokaryotes have no nucleaus
Plant cells have that animals cell don’t
Chloroplast, cell wall, vacuole
Plasma Membrane
Controls what enters and exits the cell
Components: carrier proteins and lipid bilayer
Nucleus
Location or the DNA that controls everything
Mitochondria
Creates ATP for energy
Endoplasmic reticulum
Assembles proteins for exports
Golgi apparatus
Preps, packages and sends substances via vesicles
Lysosomes
Destroy and recycle
Diffusion
No ATP needed
Simple diffusion
Substances go from area of high concentration to low concentration
Facilitated diffusion
Carrier proteins allow substances through membrane
Osmosis
Diffusion of water
Equilibrium
Equal amounts of substance across membrane
Advantages and disadvantages of light vs electron
Light:
Cheap, easy to use, magnification 10,000x, can look at living things, actual color, portable
Electron:
Expensive, needs training, magnification 200,000x, can look at only dead things, gray, doesnt move
