Chapter 8 Flashcards
divisions of the CNS
Brain and spinal cord
Divisions of the brain
Cerebrum
Cerebellum
brain stem
Diencephalon
Cerebrum
Motor function and sensory data
- largest division
-memory and Intelligence
Cerebellum
muscle coordination and balance
Brain Stem
medulla, pons and mid brain
medulla- regulated temp heart beat, BP
Diencephalon
thalamus and hypothalamus
- links our nerves to the endocrine system
PNS
On the outside, all nerves are a part of the PNS
Divisions of the PNS
-Somatic
- Voluntary actions
-Autonomic
-No conscious control
- Sympathetic
- Fight or flight
- Stops salivary glands
- Fight or flight
- Parasympathetic
- Rest and digest
- Salivary glands activated
Neuron
nerve cell
Dendrites
Receptors, pick up signal from other cells
Axon
Sends the signals down the neuron
Myelin sheath
Insulates the axon
Schwann cells
Sections of the axon that are insulated
Nodes of ranvier
In between the Schwann cels
Nerve
bundle of neurons
Synapse
Junction between two neurons
Ganglion
collection of nerve cell body that sits outside the CNS
Cranial nerves
I – OLFACTORY
II – OPTIC
III – OCULOMOTOR
IV – TROCHLEAR
V – TRIGEMINAL
VI – ABDUCENS
VII – FACIAL
VIII – VESTIBULOCOCHLEAR
IX – GLOSSOPHARYNGEAL
X – VAGUS
XI – ACCESSORY
XII - HYPOGLOSSAL
Olfactory I
carries odor from the nose to the brain
Sensory
Afferent
Optic II
Carries visual information from the eye to the brain
sensory
Afferent
Oculomotor III
contracts muscles of the eye
Motor
Efferent
Trochlear IV
motor, efferent
contracts the superior oblique muscles of the eye
Trigeminal V
Motor and sensory
largest cranial nerve
3 divisons
- V1: ophthalmic
- Afferent
- intervals forehead, eyelids, nose, lacrimal glands
-V2: maxillary
- Afferent
Intervates: Infraorbital, ASA, MSA, PSA, greater & lesser palatine, nasopalatine
-V3: mandibular
- Sensory and motor
- largest trigeminal branch
- Intervates muscles of mastication
Abducens VI
motor
Moves lateral muscles of the eyeball
Facial VII
sensory and motor
Motor: facial expression muscles
Sensory: Taste from anterior portion of the tongue
Parasympathetic: sub mandibular and sub lingual glands; lacrimal gland
Vestibulocohlear VIII
Sensory
Provides hearing and balance
Glossopharyngeal IX
Sensory and motor
- posterior 1/3 of tongue. parotid, and pharynx
- related to gag reflex
Vagus X
Sensory and motor
intervals the pharynx region and organs in the chest and abdomen
Accessory XI
Motor
- Travels through the trapezius, SCM, Etc
Hypoglossal
motor
- motor supply for intrinsic and extrinsic muscles of the tongue
