Chapter 6 Flashcards
Vascular system consists of
arteries
Capillaries
veins
they way blood travels away from the heart
- arteries
- Arterioles
- capillaries
The way blood travels to the heart
- capillaries
- Venules
- veins
The vessels communicate by
anastomosis- connecting channels among vessels
2 major arteries that supply the head and neck
Common carotid and subclavian
The origins from the heart for the common carotid and subclavian depend on the side of the body
Left side
- Starts directly at the aorta and travels up the left side of the head
Right side
- Starts at the brachiocephalic (a direct branch of the aorta)
Common carotid
Travels superiorly along the neck, neck to the trachea and larynx
splits into:
- External - supplies blood to the oral cavity
- Internal- supplies blood to everything a little above the mouth
- eyes, forehead, lachrymal gland
External carotid artery
8 branches, 4 categories
- Anterior
- Superior thyroid
- Lingual
- Facial
- Posterior
- Occipital
- Posterior auricular
- Medial
- Ascending pharyngeal
- Terminal
- Maxillary
- Superficial temporal
Superior thyroid artery
Supplies:
-larynx, thyroid, infra hyoid, and SCM
Lingual artery
Supplies the tongue and sublingual structures
-below the tongue
Facial artery
Supplies tonsils, palate, submandibular, and salivary glands
Occipital artery
travels to the posterior part of the head
Posterior auricular artery
- travels up through and behind the ear
- supplies the internal ear by its auricular branch and they mastoid process by the stylomastoid artery
Ascending pharyngeal artery
- supplies blood to the pharyngeal wall
- Can’t see from a lateral view
Superficial Temporal artery
- Supplies blood to the temporal region
- Visible under the skin
Maxillary artery
- Inferior alveolar branch
- Below the alveolar bone, supplies blood to mandibular teeth
- Posterior superior alveolar artery
- Supplies blood to the maxillary teeth
Internal Jugular vein
Runs next to the carotid
- drains the brain and most of the other structures of the head and neck
External jugular vein
- only drains a small part of the extra cranial structures
Cavernous sinus
On the lateral surfaces of the spenoid bone
involved in the spread of dental infection
Pterygoid Plexus of veins
Protects the maxillary artery from being compressed
Thrombus
A clot formed on the inner vessel wall
Embolus
a moving clot, travels through vessels
Bacteremia
Bacteria traveling in the blood
Hemorrhage
Bleeding out to the surrounding tissue
Hematoma
A bruise of the vessel, localized trauma
