Chapter 7 Vocab - Weathering, Erosion, And Soil Flashcards
“Process” where minerals on or near the surface break down and change.
Weathering
Rocks and minerals break down into smaller pieces.
Mechanical Weathering
Process that occurs when water repeatedly freezes and thaws in the cracks of rocks.
Ice wedging
Process in which outer rock layers are stripped away.
Exfoliation
How rocks and minerals undergo changes in their composition.
Chemical weathering
The chemical reaction of oxygen with other substances.
Oxidation
The removal of weathered rock and soil from its original location.
Erosion
Occurs when eroded minerals are dropped in another location.
Disposition
Erosion in which water running down the side of a slope carved a small stream channel.
Rill erosion
Erosion that occurs when a roll channel widens and deepens.
Gully erosion
Loose covering of weathered rock and decayed organic matter “HUMUS”
Soil
A soil whose parent material is local bedrock
Residential soil
Soil that develops from parent material that has been moved far away from its original location.
Transported soil
A vertical sequence of soil layers
Soil profile
A distinct layer within a soil profile
Soil horizon
