Define Expressed Powers:
Specifically defined federal constitutional powers.
Ex: Presidency’s power to make treaties, grant pardons, and nominate judges.
Define Delegated Powers:
Constitutional powers granted from one federal agency to another government agency with expressed permission.
Define Inherent Powers:
Powers that the presidency has claimed over the years that are not explicitly defined in the constitution but rather inferred.
What is the presidency’s Commander and Chief powers?
The president’s sole control over the United States military.
Define a presidential reprieve:
The cancellation or postponement of a punishment.
Define a presidential Pardon:
Forgiveness of a crime and cancellation of relevant penalty.
Define a presidential Amnesty:
A pardon extended to a group of people
What is the presidential executive privilege?
It is the “claim” that confidential conversations between the president and his advisers should never be revealed without the consent of the president .
A presidential Veto is what?
The president’s constitutional right to be able to strike down a bill within 10 days of passing.
A 2/3 vote from each congressional house is needed to overturn a veto.
A presidential Pocket Veto is what?
The act of vetoing a bill by not approving a bill when Congress has adjourned.
A presidential Line-Item Veto is what?
The president’s power to strike down specific lines of a bill passed by congress. Thus, altering bills to hi liking.
In order to further protect their constitutional power to declare war Congress passed the War Powers Resolution. It states that:
In order for the executive branch to send troops into action abroad Congress Authorization is needed. Unless troops are already being attacked or seriously being threatened.
Legislative initiative is defined as:
The president’s power to bring legislative agenda to congress.
What is an Executive Action:
A rule or regulation created by the president that has the same effect and power as legislation.
What is traditionally a Cabinet?
The collection of secretaries (chief administrators) of the federal government.
They are appointed by the president with consent from the Senate.
