Chapter 7 - The Periodic Table Flashcards
How are electrons arranged reading from left to right?
They are arranged in order of increasing atomic number
How are groups arranged in the periodic table?
Each element in a group contains the same number of outer shell electrons and has similar properties
What does the number of the period show?
It gives the number of the highest energy electron shell in an element’s atoms
What does periodicity mean?
Periodicity means the repeating trend in properties of the elements going across a period
Give 4 properties that periodicity looks at?
- electron configuration
- ionisation energy
- structure
- melting points
What is the trend across a period in terms of filling sub shells?
For each period the s- and p- sub shells are filled in the same way
What is the trend going down a group in terms of electron configuration?
The elements in each group have atoms with the same number of electrons in each sub-shell
What is the name for group 1 metals?
Alkali metals
What is the name for group 2 metals?
Alkaline earth metals
What is group 3-12 called?
Transition metals
What is group 15 called?
Pnictogens
What is group 16 called?
Chalcogens
What is group 17 called?
Halogens
What is the name of group 18?
Noble gases
