Chapter 7 Solutions Flashcards
Mixture where particles of a material are more or less evenly dispersed throughout a liquid or gas. Largest particles easiest to separate
Suspension
Mixture consisting of tiny particles that are intermediate in size between those in suspensions and those in solutions and those that are suspended in a liquid or gas.
Colloid
Any mixture of two or more miscible liquids where one liquid is dispersed in the other.
Emulsion
A homie genius mixture of two or more substances uniformly spread throughout a single phase.
Solution
The substance that dissolves in a solution
Solute
The substance that the solute dissolves in
Solvent
A solid or liquid mixture of two or more metals
Alloy
A molecule that has an uneven distribution of electrons
Polar compound
The intermolecular force occurring when a hydrogen atom that is boned to a highly electronegative atom of one molecule is attracted to two unshared electrons of another molecule.
Hydrogen bonding
A compound whose electrons are equally distributed among its atoms
No polar compound
The total amount of a solute that will dissolve in a given quantity of solvent at a given temperature and pressure
Solubility
The amount of a particular substance in a given quantity of a mixture, solution, or ore.
Concentration
A solution that has less solute than a saturated solution and has room to dissolve more solute
Unsaturated solution
Solution that holds more dissolved solute that is needed to reach equilibrium at a given temperature
Saturated solution
A mixture that isn’t the same throughout
Isn’t evenly distributed or mixed uniformly
Heterogeneous mixture
