Chapter 11 Forces Flashcards
Inertia
an object at rest stays at rest and if the object is moving it keeps moving at a constant velocity
Newton’s 1st law of motion
Matter withstands changes in motion. An object won’t move unless a force is put on it.
Newton’s 2nd law of motion
Explains what happens when an unbalanced force on an object’s motion
Free fall
Motion of a body and the only force acting on the body is gravity.
Terminal velocity
A falling object’s constant velocity when air resistance’s force is equal in magnitude and gravity is the force opposite in direction.
Projectile motion
Curved path an object follows when thrown near earth’s surface
Law of universal gravitation
In the universe all of the objects are attracted to each other through gravitational force.
Weight
Amount of gravity’s force on an object
Apparent weightlessness
Astronauts flat in space because them and their surroundings are accelerating at the same rate. So the floor in the shuttle doesn’t push up on them.
Newton’s 3rd law of motion
Every action force there’s an opposite reaction force and equal reaction force.
Action force
The force put on an object
Reaction force
Force that object is pushing back on a force pushing on it
