Chapter 7- Solutions Flashcards
Suspension
mixture of particles in a material with more or less closely paced spaces
Colloid
tiny particles intermediate in size between solution and suspension, suspended in solid, liquid, or gas
Emulsion
mixture of two or more immiscible liquids, one liquid is more dispersed
Solution
the result of a mixture. Which passed without phase
Soluble
When a substance can easily dissolve in water
Insoluble
When a substance is hard to dissolve in water. Like oil.
Solute
substance dissolves in solvent
Solvent
Dissolves solute
Alloy
A mix of metallic elements forming a solid or liquid mixture.
Heterogeneous mixture
two substances that don’t mix thoroughly and evenly
Homogeneous mixture
When to substances mix thoroughly in one phase
Decanting
I
Immiscible
substances that won’t mix together
Polar compound
When an element’s electrons aren’t evenly distributed
Nonpolar compound
electrons equally contributed among atoms
Solubility
maximum amount of solute
Hydrogen bonding
When there is a hydrogen atom that is bonded to an atom with a highly electronegative atom. This usually occurs in water molecules
Concentration
A ratio of solute to solvent. Without solute
Unsaturated
When there is too little of a solute in a solvent. There is still room to dissolve more in the solvent
Saturated
Where a solute and solvent has reached equilibrium.
Supersaturated
When there is too much solute in the solvent. The solvent would work to reach a new equilibrium
Diluted
With a little solute in a solvent
Molarity
An exact measurement of concentration in a substance.
