Chapter 10- Motion Flashcards
Motion
when an object changes its position from the starting point
Reference point
the starting point of a motion
Displacement
the change in the objects position
Speed
distance/time is the formula when a motion occurs
Average speed
adding the speeds together and divide by the amount that you added together.
Instantaneous speed
Is not the same speed in intervals of time
Velocity
similar to speed, but also includes direction
Resultant Velocity
objects moving in the same or opposite directions can be determined with math.
Acceleration
a change in velocity. Whether it is speed, direction, or both.
Centripetal acceleration
an object moving in a circular motion
Constant acceleration
when velocity changes at the same amount through intervals of time.
Force
action on an object to change state of rest or object
Net force
the combination of all forces acting on an object
Balanced force
when an object has equal force and remains at rest
Unbalanced force
when an object has uneven forces acting upon it and moves the object
Friction
Force opposes motion between two surfaces in contact
Sliding friction
Objects slide past each other.
Rolling friction
Round object rolls over flat surface
Fluid friction
When something is sliding through the air
Static friction
Friction between two objects in rest
Kinetic sand
Friction between two surfaces sliding over each other
