Chapter 13- Temperature Flashcards
Temperature
Temperature is a measurement of how hot or cold a substance is; measured in Celsius
Thermometer
A tool to measure the hot or coldness of a substance
Absolute zero
When the temperature of molecular energy is the minimum
Heat
Transfer of energy between objects with different temperatures
Thermal conduction
Heat energy is transferred through a material
Convection
Movement of matter from different densities caused by temperature variations
Convection current
Vertical movement of air currents from temperature variations
Radiation
Energy transferred as electromagnetic waves. Like visible light and infrared waves.
Specific heat
Amount of heat needed to to raise temp of 1 kg by 1 K. This is a physical property.
Electromagnetic waves
Production of electricity being accelerated
Conductor
A metal that courses electricity through it
Insulator
Reduces electricity flow
Refrigerant
Causes cooling
Heat engine
A machine producing power from heat
