Principal- based theory

A
  • A set of rules or values used to determine whether an action is ethical or not
  • Can be problematic because who’s values are they based off of and also there is always exceptions to people’s principals

Consequence-based theory

A
  • Whether or not the action is ethical or not is determined by the outcome of the decision
  • But the action cannot be illlegal, even if it has good consequence

Utilitarian-based theory

A
  • The action is ethical if majority benefit from the decision
  • Becomes problematic when its time to consider the portion of people who do not benefit from the decision

  • Stories/folklore is used to guide decisions and determine if an action is ethical or not
  • This one is dangerous because stories and fairytales can be twisted to support whatever cause/action

  • Consultation: Hearing what the public needs. These opinions can be gathered through discussions, surveys, meetings
  • Service standards should be regularly checked to make sure that people are satisfied the service they are receiving. Service should also be compared internationally
  • Improving people’s access to services
  • People should be treated with courtesy, respect, and consideration to change people’s perception around public service delivery
  • Any info about the government department and service delivery issues should be given to public service employees so that they are able to answer any questions from the customer
  • Whenever an issue arises there should be mechanisms in place to fix the problem
  • Service delivery should offer value for money while still being effective and reducing costs

Consequences of unethical behaviour

  • Creates distrust as employees see others getting away with things they arent supposed to
  • The unethical offense may lead to embarrassment, or if its serious a criminal record
  • May lead the business into a class action suit where all consumers that feel mistreated take the business to court
  • Business could get boycotted or reputation could be jeopardised
  • Business could get fined
  • Lower profits due to above mentioned may result in investors withdrawing and their share price dropping on JSE
