Business Communication
- Any internal or extrernal communication that takes place in the business context
- Can be hindered by filters/barriers
- Allows business to communicate idea to target market
Filters that may lead to miscommunications
- Language barriers- slang/jargon
- Cultural Differences- religion or tradition
- Physical Noise-Loudness, extreme tempratures, distractions
- Psychological Factors- Cannot recieve communication if needs are not met
Different forms of communication
- Verbal- includes words in any form
- Non-verbal- Graphics or body language, etc.
Verbal communication
- Telephone- Communicates with buyers and helps business pursue new clients, buers can also ask questions
- Oral presentation- Using PPT or pamphlets to give feedback or inform about future events
- Business magazines- Catalogues given to customers in the mail or at the shops
- Business letters/statements- Mailed to customers to give them info like a launch of a product or amounts that may be due
- Electronic media- SMS or emails sent to create word of mouth and promote business
- Business reports- A method of organising/presenting specific info to a specific group
- Business plan- A tool used to apply for financing and for the owner to assess the business to identify possible areas of improvement
PPT rules
- One idea per slide
- Use graphics and colour that is not distracting
- Use examples
- Use non-verbal tools
- Keep it short and simple
- Do not just read the presentation
Non-verbal
Non-verbal adds to verbal as body language enhance the quality of verbal communication and graphics add to intercation and attention of a presentation

Project plan
- A tool used after business plan is done and execution of plan has to be done
- Indicates what has to be done, who has to do it, and when it has to be done, and what resources are needed
Responding to communication
- Electronic media- take your time responding to make sure response is not emotional and is rather professional
- Telephone- Answer phone as soon as possible, if you cant answer the question then promise to call back
- Presentation- Listen to any questions carefully and answer confidently
- Business letters- Answer as soon as possible with no grammar/language errors
Primary research procedure
- Make sure that the objectives of the research are clearly defined and put on paper
- Consider ethical issues like asking fro permission
- Consider doing secondary research as it may save time on something that may have been done unnecessarily
- Research different research methods and choose the most appropriate
- Make sure research sample is sufficient
- Use age brackets if necessary
- Do not ask vague, biased, or double barralled questions
Halo effect
When a certain attribute of a product is carried over when answering the rest of the question
Secondary research
The difference between secondary research and plagiarism is that you have to draw your own conclusion from the secondary research and referebce your sources
Common errors in researching
- Basing entire study on one source
- Believeing everything you read
- Usin research to validate preconcieved ideas
- Generalising
Hawthorne effect
- When people act differently now that they know that they are being observed/studied
