Chapter 7 (Midterm) Flashcards
Preserving Biodiversity
pollination
A process in flowering plants and cone-bearing plants in which pollen is transferred from the male part of a plant to the female part of a plant (ovule) of the same species.
HIPPCO (main threats human pose towards environment)
Habitat Loss
Invasive Species
Population Growth/Consumption
Pollution
Climate Change
Overexploitation
The single greatest threat to biodiversity and ecosystems today
habitat loss
invasive species
An introduced species (not native to environment) that establishes itself, threatens endemic species and biodiversity, and has the potential to cause major ecosystem changes.
Types of pollution that threaten biodiversity
Mercury and phosphorus
cultural eutrophication
Eutrophication due to nutrient influx from human activities.
poaching
The illegal hunting, capturing, or taking of wildlife.
mass extinction events
at least 50 percent of living
species must become extinct within a relatively short period of time
Anthropocene
Name given to the current geological epoch and mass extinction event induced by human-caused environmental changes.
Convention on Biological Diversity
An international collaboration of many governments to preserve biodiversity, act sustainably, and equally share in the benefits of natural goods.
captive breeding programs
A program used as a source of captive-bred animals and plants that are kept in controlled environments such as a zoo or wildlife reserve and then reintroduced into the wild. A CBP is considered a last resort to help recover an endangered species.
ex situ (off-site) conservation
Protection of an organism by moving it outside of its natural distribution.
seed banks
storing of seeds (ex-situ)
How to reduce the amount of land devoted to agriculture?
reduce meat consumption
density dependent factor
factor whose effect on pop. changes as pop. density changes (predation, disease, competition)
