Mass media
TV, radio, newspaper, magazines, internet and other means of popular communication
Media Events
Staged events for the media and specifically done because the media is there.
Press conferences
Meetings of public officials with reporters
Investigative journalism
The use of detective reporting to check up on the statements of gov. officials to make sure they’re doing what they’re supposed to.
Print media and Electronic media
Newspapers and magazines are print media. TV, radio, and the internet are print media.
Narrowcasting
Media such as ESPN or MTV is focused on a small or specific audience.
Selective Exposure
This is where people choose to get new from sources that support their own viewpoints and not others.
Chains
Groups of media published by media conglomerates(Disney, Warner Brothers, etc.) today account for over 4/5 of the nation’s daily newspapers.
Beats
Specific locations from which news emanates such as Congress or the White House. Reporters are often assigned to specific beats to figure out what’s going on over there.
Sound bites
apx. 10 seconds video clip shown from a politican’s speech on a nightly news channel
Trial Balloons
Intentional news leaks to figure out what the publics reaction is to it.
Talking head
A shot of a person’s face talking directly to the camera. Usually not interesting to the public so not shown for very long.
Policy Agenda
The most serious issues are discussed and worked to solve by politicians and the public.
Policy Entrepreneurs
People who invest their political capital into an issue. The don’t have to be in the gov., they can be anyone or any interest group.
