Preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience

What is race?
Refers to groups of people who have difference and similarities in biological traits deemed by society to be SOCIALLY SIGNIFICANT, meaning that people treat other people differently because of them.
What is ethnicity?
Shared cultural practices, perspectives, and distinctions that set apart one group of people from another
What are the most common characteristics distinguishing various ethnic groups?
Ancestry Sense of history Language Religion Forms of dress
How are the ethnic differences acquired?
They are learned.
What is culture?
The learned or shared knowledge, bliefs, traditions, customs, rules, arts, history, folklore and institutions of a group of people used to interpret experiences and to generate social behavior.
What does culture influence?
Attitude
Belief
Value
Behavior
Who taught us how to believe and treat people who are different than we are?
Our families/society
What is cultural awareness?
Developing our ability to see when and how good communication is breaking down or could break down
What is the difference between knowledge and awareness?
Someone may know a piece of information about culture but are not aware of when and how that information comes into play in real life.
When does knowledge and awareness occur during an encounter?
Knowledge occurs before the encounter
Awareness occurs during the encounter
What is awareness?
Awareness of one’s own cultural values and beliefs
Recognition of attitudes and behaviors influenced by belief
What is understanding?
The cultural beliefs and values of others and how they are influenced by them.
