Positive interpretations of the event as holding a spiritual lesson or benefit

Interpreting event as a punishment from God
What is interpersonal spiritual discontent?
Conflicts with a religious community or spiritual abandonment
What is demonic reappraisals?
Interpreting the event as the work of the devil
What is reappraisals of God’s power?
Considering that God may not be all powerful
When can spiritual coping go wrong?
When individuals are unable to INTEGRATE the various aspects of their spiritual lives

What is wrong direction?
Destinations, goals, purposes in one’s life are not well integrated.
What is an example of wrong direction?
Other values in life are excluded in pursuit of rigid spiritual ones
What is wrong road?
Well-integrated values and direction in life but methods taken are not integrated with other behaviors
What is an example of wrong road?
Illness comes from God not genetics or other factors
What is against the stream?
Lack of integration does not lie within the individual, but between an individual and his/her religious system.
What is an example of against the stream?
Participating in an act that goes against the values of the religious community
What is undifferentiated or one-sided spirituality?
Pursuing one narrow aspect of one’s faith which hinders the individual’s ability to produce a variety of coping responses
What is fragmented spirituality?
A gap between what one says, does, and believes produce unstable support in times of stress
What is inflexible spirituality?
Fundamentalism which affects a persons ability to adapt to new modes of coping. Inflexible spiritual standards may compound problems
What is insecure spiritual attachment?
Feelings of alienation from the sacred and mistrust of God’s presence during difficult times.
What are the clinical implications of spiritual coping?
By intervening, more positive spiritual coping strategies can be suggested and the patient can better adjust.
What three questions can you ask to understand a little more of the patient’s spiritual history?
- Is spirituality or religion important to you?
- Are there ways that your spirituality (religion) has been helpful to you as you have coped with your illness (trauma)?
