Chapter 7 Adaptive Immunity Flashcards
What are antigens
They are molecular targets of antibodiess and lymphocytes
Where are T cells from
Thymus
Where are B cells from
The bone marrow
What is clonal selection
Triggered by the infection process it is when an antigen Is processed by a phagocyytic cell (Dendritic cells) which also expresses the processed antigen on their surfaces and present the antigen to lymphocytes
What can B cells turn into
Plasma cells that become factories for the production of antiboidies
What can T cells into
T cytoxic cells kills a target cell
T helper cells aids the clonal section
T regulatory cells suppresses innaprpriate immune response
Humoral immunity
When antibodies float around the blood and defend against microbes and toxins1
Cellular immunity
When T cells circulate the body snf sis om defending against intracellular pathogens and cancer cells
Active vs passive immunity
Active immunity is acquired through vaccines it is a purposeful response to antigens
Passive immunity is when there has had previous exposure and the body develops an immune response
What is an immunogen
A molecule that will induce an immune response
IgG description
Most abundant courses the placenta
IgA description
Found in secretions
Igm Description
The largest immunoglobulin the first immunoglobulin to be produced in the human body
IgE Description
Primarily good with allergies and parasites
IgD Description
An early receptor for the surface of early B cells
What are the three parts to an antibody molecule
Two identical fragments called the antigen binding fragments and the other part is the crystalizzeable fragment
What does the antigen binding fragment do
Contains the recognition sites for antigens and confers the molecule specificity towards a particular antigen
What does the crystallizable fragment do
Responsible for the bilogical functions of antibodies
What of antibodies do
Protect the body against infection
How do antiboidies prevent infection
Neutralization
Aggulation
Precipitation
Name the phases of the immune response
Fitsy phase is the generation of clonal diversity
Second phase clonal selection
What is clonal diversity
The production of a large population of T cells before birth that have the capacity to recognize almost any foreign antigens found in the environment
