Chapter 7 Flashcards
Child care
Family day care homes- not state monitored
90% or or more facilities operate underground
Poor families most likely to suffer from inadequate childcare
Latchkey kids
Children return from school to empty home
Family Breakup
Divorce associated with conflict, hostility, aggression, weakened attachment, greater susceptibility to peer pressure
More family transitions- more likely to engage in delinquency
Boys more affected by father (problem solving), girls more affected by mother
Blended families
Nuclear families that are the product of divorce and remarriage, blending one parent from each of two families and combined children into one unit
Family conflict
Not all unhappy marriages end in divorce, some continue in conflict
Intra-family conflict common in many families
Child’s perception of parents happiness a predictor of delinquency
Causes more damage than family breakup
Bad parents or bad kids? Both produce conflict
Family ineffectiveness
Inconsistent discipline (too harsh or too lenient)
Corporal punishment
Inconsistent supervision
Poor parenting skills
Poor communication (my way or the highway)
Resource dilution
Large families more likely to produce delinquents, not enough money or time spent with children
Family deviance
Parental deviance has a powerful influence on delinquent behavior
Genetics, substance abuse, parenting skills, labeling/stigma
Effects can be devastating and long term
Siblings influence delinquency
Child abuse
Any physical or emotional trauma for which no reasonable explanation (accident) can be found; generally a pattern rather than a single act
First documented case, Mary Ellen Wilson- 1847 (removed by SPCA)
Types of abuse
Physical- inappropriate touching, hitting
Physical neglect- failure to provide adequate food, shelter, medical care
Emotional abuse- constant criticism and rejection, inadequate nurturing
Sexual abuse- exploitation of children through rape, incest, and molestation by parents, family members, or legal guardians
Abandonment- Leaving child with intent to sever relationship
