Chapter 7 Flashcards
Where do plants or photosynthetic organisms gather energy?
The sun
Where do humans gather energy?
From the good they eat
What is cellular respiration
The process cells use to transfer energy from the organic molecules in food
What are the organic molecules in the food that can be broke down
- Proteins
- Fats
- Carbohydrates
What is the formula for cellular respiration
Glucose + O2 > CO2 + H2O + energy (ATP)
In which organelles does cellular respiration occur
The mitochondrion most chemical reactions happen here
Do plants need oxygen
Yes without it they can’t perform aerobic respiration and can’t break down the food to energy
What is aerobic respiration
Cellular respiration that uses oxygen
What uses aerobic respiration
The cells in our bodies, plants and yeast cells
What do cells do when they don’t have oxygen
Cells use a process called fermentation to keep making energy
What’s organisms are capable of fermentation
Bacteria, yeast and some human muscles
What is anaerobic respiration
It’s the same as fermentation. There is not oxygen
What is lactate fermentation
Anaerobic respiration occurs in muscle cells when animals exercise very hard
What is lactic acid
When the O2 can’t keep up with the demand and the glucose ferments making lactic acid
No O2 + glucose > lactate + energy
What is alcoholic fermentation
Anaerobic respiration that is used by yeast and plants
What do people use alcoholic fermentation in Yeast
To make wine and beer also bread and
Ethanol additives for gasoline
Why did the eight climbers die
Because they didn’t get enough oxygen for their cells and the cells just started to die
