Chapter 7 Flashcards
Prototrophic vs Auxotrophic:
Auxotrophs are organisms that lose the ability to produce specific organic substances needed for their survival, while prototrophs are organisms that are capable of producing all organic substances essential for their growth from inorganic compounds
Auxotrophic
Require a specific growth substance beyond the minimum required for normal metabolism and reproduction of the parental or wild-type strain.
Prototrophic
Not requiring specific nutritional substances for normal metabolism and reproduction : not differing from the wild type in nutritional requirements. used especially of bacteria and fungi.
Simple Diffusion (passive transport):
Facilitated Diffusion (passive transport):
Ion-coupled Transport (active transport):
ABC Transport (active transport):
Group Translocation:
What are the two types of diffusion in passive transport?
What are the two types of transport in active transport?
What is the other type of translocation?
Passive transport: Simple diffusion and facilitated diffusion
Active transport:
Ion-coupled transport and ABC transporters
Group translocation
Heterotrophs (feeder)
Organic compounds into intermediate molecules for central pathways.
Autotrophs (feeder):
Inorganic carbon molecules for carbon (Calvin Cycle)
13 precursor metabolites include:
Calvin cycle:
Process that plants/algae use to turn carbon dioxide from air into sugar.
Assimilation of phosphorus:
Inorganic phosphate and organic phosphate, assimilate in feeder and central pathways .
*ATP
What are the other requirements for building molecules?(4)
13 precursor metabolites
energy
reducing power
enzymatic regulation
