What is it?
a. Worldwide collection of millions of computers and networks of all sizes
b. No one owns it.
c. Developed by U.S. Military. Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET): Project started in 1969 by the U.S. Department of Defense was the beginning of the Internet
What is WWW:
- “world wide web” invented by Tim Berners-Lee
a. Make internet available to regular users not just researchers.
What is Hyperlink
a. Hyperlink is used to jump to another web page
How domain name works
a. When you request a website by typing its domain name, DNS will be visited first for the corresponding IP address. Then the request will go to the web server based on the IP address. Then, the content you requested will be sent to your computer. The rules and basic processes for data communication are covered in the data communication system chapter.
What are URL’s
Uniform resource locators (URLs)
a. Address of a document or site on the Internet
Top Level Domains (TLD):
a. Denotes the type of organization or country the address specifies
i. Organizational (gTLDs): e.g., .org, .com, and .gov
ii. Country-code (ccTLDs): e.g., .ca, .cn, .br, and .uk
What is HTML
HTML (Hypertext Markup Language)
a. Programming language for websites: defines a page’s layout and appearance by using tags and attributes
Difference of Internet, Intranet, Extranet
Internet (everyone), Intranet (inside corporation), Extranet (interorganizational; you put a portion of the content in the intranet into the extranet for authorized organizations)
DMZ
a. Refers to the demilitarized zone, an area of the network that’s separate from the organization’s LAN
b. Typically, where the extranet server is located
