Pennsylvania Constitution (1776)
This was a constitution that granted all taxpaying men the right to vote and hold office and created a unicameral legislature with complete power.
This caused controversy, and stirred up ideas for a “proper” government.
Mixed Government
This was John Adam’s theory that called for 3 branches of government, each representing one function.
This was important because it became the basis for American government. It also influenced many of the colonies government.
Articles of Confederation (1777)
This document defined the structure of government from 1781 to 1788, where the Union was a confederation of equal states.
This brought the states together. It allowed each state to govern itself as it pleased.
Northwest Ordinance (1787)
This was a land act that provided for overly settlement and established a process where settled territories would become states. It banned slavery in the North West.
This led the colonies into war again. It did keep from making politically dependent states in the West.
Shay’s rebellion
This was an uprising led by dissident farmers protesting the taxation policies of the eastern elites.
This led to attempts to fix the American government.
Philadelphia Convention
This was a convention where 55 delegates from 12 colonies (not Rhode Island) came together to fix the countries government.
This was where the permanent government was decided, and where it’s fate rested.
Virginia plan
This was a plan by James Madison that had a 3 branch system with a house of congress tied by vote.
This plan was used in the Great Compromise and led to the government using the 3 branches of government and the House of Representatives.
New Jersey Plan
This was a plan made by delegates from smaller states that had a single-house congress with each state getting one vote.
This led to the creatation of the senate and the use of federalism.
Federalists
These are supporters of the constitution.
They worked to help gain support and ratify the constitution.
Antifederalists
These were opponents of the ratification of the constitution.
They used attics of fear to try and keep away the constitution, believing that wealthy men would end up with all control.
Federalist no. 10
This was an essay by James Madison that argued for republic liberty.
This largely gained support fit the constitution by explaining how a republic could work on a larger scale.
Judith Sargent Murray
She was a female essayist of the revolutionary era who wrote “On the Equality of the Sexes”.
She was important because she wrote of economic independence and better educational opportunities for women to gain support for said issues.
James Madison
He was a delegate at the Philadelphia convention who was for an increase on national authority.
He proposed the Virginia plan, which was used to create the government of America.
