Quakers
Definition- religious Society of Friends. This was a Christian movement devoted to peaceful principles. Founded by George Fox in England.
Significance- The Quakers were also the first organization in history to ban slave holdings
Proprietorship
Definition- An unincorporated business owned and run by one individual
Significance- a middle ground between the royal province and the governing colonies
Navigation Acts
Definition- A series of laws set out by England that restricted the use of foreign ships to sell/trade between colonies
Significance- This was England’s way of trying to gain as much profit
Dominion of New England
Definition- founded in 1686. This was an administrative union of created by King James ii that linked Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island and New Hampshire.
Significance- King James ii made this union to gain control over the colonies and slowly start curving the rights of the colonists.
Glorious Revolution
Definition- occurred in England during the rule of King James ii while when the citizens rebelled against his over powering regulations. This was a bloodless war that eventually ended in King James being over thrown.
Significance- even in the New England colonies, colonists rebelled against his set of laws that tried to take away they’re rights and over throwing the Dominion of New England
Tribalization
Definition- the act of making a tribal unification
Significance- the early governments started organizing the tribes together and designating them into “respected” areas basically moving them off they’re land.
Covenant chain
Definition- a series of alliances and treaties developed during the 17th century. This included the Iroquois Confederacy, Britain colonies, and some Indian tribes.
Significance-These treaties and councils covered such matters as trade, settlement, and the resolution of episodes of violence between Colonists and the Iroquois
South Atlantic System
Definition- Included spanish colonies in South and Central America, they produced sugar, silver, and tobacco
Significance- relied heavily on slavery from Indians and Africans
Stono Rebellion
Definition- September 1739 a group of 20 slaves rebelled against their slave owners near the stono river in south carolina.
Significance- this was the first and the biggest rebellion the slaves had pulled off against their owners
Gentility
Definition- The superiority of class
Significance- when leaving the old world to the new world the immigrants searched for a chance to the upper class with all the great opportunities America offered
Salutary Neglect
Definition- a British policy that allowed colonists to violate the trade laws
Significance- this policy was never documented and was given to the colonists by the British to try to keep loyalty in their government
William Penn
Definition- Was the founder of Pennsylvania
Significance- was a Quaker and believed in religious freedom
John Locke
Definition- he was an English philosopher and written many essays I’ve religious tolerance and separation of church and state.
Significance- he laid the work for the enlightenment era and influenced the United States through his theory of government of “life, liberty, and estate”
Edmund Andros
Definition- an English colonial administrator in North America
Significance- he was the governor of the Dominion of New England when it existed
Middle Passage
Definition- a flossing from Africa to the Americas which the ships made carrying their cargo of slaves.
Significance- more slaves meant for work force for goods to be produced
