What does the Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Act 1980 say goods must be?
Goods must:
- Be of merchantable quality
- Be fit for their purpose
- Confirm to the sample
- Be as described bb the shop, packed or adverts.
Name three considerations when choosing a brand.
- The price of each brand of the product.
- The quality of each brand of the product.
- Special offers available from certain manufacturers. For example, when buying a car you may be able to get one years free insurance if you purchase on brand instead of another.

- Use materials fit for their purpose and of merchantable quality
- Be provided with proper care and diligence
What are the 3Rs?
The 3Rs are, refund, replace, repair. These are forms of redress.
Name three times when complaints are not valid.
- You damaged the goods through misuse or accident
- Yo change your mind
- It was bought from a private individual or friend
What is the Consumer Protection Act 2007?
- It established the national consumer agency.
- Consumer protection. It deals with misleading claims about goods services and prices.
- Misleading practises, aggressive practises.
What is a false economy?
A situation where we buy something that costs less than other brands or seems to be better value but turns out o be more expensive in the long run e.g. buying a cheap battery that costs 50c and only lasts for three hours instead of buying a better brand of battery that costs €1 and lasts for 10 hours.
What is a consumer?
Anyone who buys goods or services for their own use.
What is a brand?
The identity of a certain product. It usually refers the the manufacturer of the product e.g. Kellogs.
What does caveat emptor mean?
Let the buyer beware.
Name three things an Informed Consumer does.
- Checks for value/quality - makes inquiries, shops around, checks prices to get value for money.
- Keeps receipts.
- Does not impulse buy - prepares a budget and sticks to it.
What is a guarantee?
A promise from a manufacturer to offer a refund or a replacement to consumers who have purchased faulty goods.
What is a warranty?
An additional promise by a manufacturer or seller to repair damaged goods within a stated period of time.
What is a credit note?
A document given by the retailer to the consumer for the value of the goods returned. It allows the consumer to purchase other goods from that shop equal in value to the goods returned.
What is receipt?
Written proof to the consumer that they have paid for a good or service.
