What is employment?
Employment is work carried out in return for payment e.g. A teacher teaching their class
What are employees?
Employees are people who work for others in return for payment.
What are employers?
Employers are people who hire others to do work for them in return for payment.
Who are they labour force?
The labour force consists of all the people who are available for work.
Who are not in the labour force?
Those who are retired, those who are in school, collage or on training courses and those who do not wish to work outside of the home.
What is agriculture?
Agriculture is the area of employment that includes all people employed in farming, fishing and forestry.
What is industry?
Industry is the area of employment that includes all of the people employed by firms that manufacture goods and the people involved in construction.
What is services?
Services is the area of employment that includes all of the people employed by firms that provide services like insurance.
What is unemployment?
Unemployment is when people who are willing and able to work are unable to find a suitable job.
How is help given to the unemployed?
- Jobseekers Benefit is payed to unemployed people on a regular basis
- Training programmes are set up by FÁS
What is redundancy?
Workers are let go because there is no work for them to do.
How can unemployment be reduced?
- Irish people could buy more Irish-made goods
- Irish people could be encouraged to start their own business
What are the right of an employee?
- To receive a fair days wage for a fair days work
- To be given safe and healthy working conditions
- To be treated the same as other employees
What are the responsibilities of an employee?
- The employee should do a fair days work for the money they receive
- The employee should be on time for work
- The employee should not steal or damage the employers property
What is self employment?
Self employed people are said to work for themselves.
Why are people self employed?
- They want their own boss and want to make all of the decisions
- They may be unemployed and can’t find a job
What are the rewards of self employment?
- You’re your own boss
- You can choose your own working hours
- You get to keep all of the profits
What are the risks of self employment?
- You must provide all of the money needed to start the business
- You could loose the money you invest in the business is it doesn’t work out
- You are responsible for all areas of the business
What is the public sector?
All the people who are employed by the state e.g. Teachers, doctors and nurses
What is work?
Work is any activity that requires effort e.g. Homework
What is the private sector?
All the people who are not employed by the state e.g. Carpenters and plumbers
What is an organisation structure?
An organisation structure shows the position of each person in the business, from the ownership hit down to the most junior employees.
What is a supervisor?
A supervisor is the person on the factory floor who is given responsibility to make sure that others are carrying out their jobs properly.
What is the standard organisation structure for a business?
- Shareholders
- Board of Directors
- Chief Executive Officer (CEO)
- Managing, Production, Finance, Sales and Human Resources Managers
Who is the managing director?
The managing director is the most senior employee in the firm and is in charge of the day-to-day running of the business.
What are the responsibilities of the human resources manager?
- To interview and recruit new staff when needed.
- To provide training courses
- To make sure the workplace is safe and healthy
What are the jobs in a firm?
- Manual: Physical work
- Clerical: Office work
- Technical: Jobs that require a special skill
- Services: Jobs that provide service to others
How are employees in a firm divided by their skills?
- Professional: They have a professional qualification usually obtained from a university e.g. Accountant
- Skilled: They have a skill obtained from a training course e.g. Electrician
- Semi-Skilled: They have been trained for one area e.g. Machine Operator
- Unskilled: They have no training or qualifications e.g. Cleaner
