A person or firm who transports goods for other firms in return for a fee e.g. Railway Companies
What is a courier?
A common carrier that delivers small items such as letters e.g. DHL International
What is a tachograph?
An instrument in the cab of a truck or coach which measures the number of hours a lorry driver spends driving.
What are the uses of transport?
- Bring raw materials to manufacturers factory
- Distribute finished products to wholesalers, retailers and direct to consumers
- Enable employees to travel to work
Why would a retailer provide a delivery service?
- Some consumers are unable to transport goods e.g. Too big
- To compete with businesses who either provide a delivery service or don’t
- To allow for online shopping
What are the types of transport?
Road, rail, air, sea, pipeline.
What are the advantages to road transport?
- Road network extends to all parts
- Flexible (any time/place)
- Can advertise on vehicle
What are the disadvantages of road transport?
- Cost of driver’s wages, tax and high insurance
