What is communication?
The transfer of information, views and ideas from one person to another
What is a ‘PRO’?
Public Relations Officer - Responsible for communication between the firm and the public
What are the objectives of communication?
Must be:
- Received
- Understood
- Accepted
- Receiver must take Action
What are the TYPES of communication? (2)
- Internal: Communication that takes place inside a firm or organisation e.g. Intercom and Noticeboards
- External: Communication that takes place outside that organisation e.g. Between suppliers, customers e.g. Fax, Letter
What are the FORMS of communication? (3)
- Oral e.g. Face to face, telephone, meetings, radio
- Written e.g. Letters, email, memos
- Visual e.g. Television, PowerPoints, charts and graphs
What are the advantages and disadvantages of oral communication?
Adv: Mistakes and misunderstandings can be corrected immediately
Dis: Often no record or oral communication
What are the advantages and disadvantages of written communication?
Adv: Permanent record of communication
Dis: May take longer to get feedback e.g. By Post
What are the advantages and disadvantages of visual communication?
Adv: Tends and comparisons can easily be made
Dis: Usually had to be with some other form communication
What should we consider when choosing a method of communication?
- Cost
- Destination (Internal or External?)
- Record (Do we need a copy for our records?)
What are the benefits of effective communication?
- The organisation will be more successful because enquires, orders, invoices and complaints are dealt with quickly.
- Workers will be happier because they feel that they are part of the organisation which will lead them to work harder.
