Semantic Differential Format
A survey question using a response format using a response scale. Each # is anchored with contrasting adjectives
Leading Question
Types of question that are problematic because the wording encourages one answer more than others
Double Barreled Question
Problematic because there are two question in one
Negatively Worded Question
A type of question that contains negative phrasing making the wording complicated or confusing
Acquisience
Saying “yes,” or “strongly agree,” to every question
Fence Sitting
Neutral answers to every question
Socially Desirable Responding
aka Faking Good,
giving answers to a survey to make one look better than on really is
Observational Research
The process of watching people or animals and systemically recording their behavior
Serves as the basis for frequency claims and to operationalize variable in association or causal claims
Observer Effect
aka Expectancy Effect
a change in study participant behavior in direction observer is expecting
Masked (Blind) Design
Observers are unaware of experimental conditions to which participants have designed
Reactivity
A change in behavior when participant knows they are being watched
Unobtrusive Observations
An observation in a study made indirectly through physical traces of behavior or made by someone who is hidden or posing as a bystander
