sleep is defined as:
a regularly occurring ASC that typically occurs naturally and is primarily characterised by total or partial suspension of conscious awareness.

normal waking consciousness is defined as:
awareness of your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours including internal and external environments
altered state of consciousness is defined as:
any characteristically different from NWC in terms of awareness, thoughts, etc.
objective measures of consciousness:
EEG, EMG, EOG,
EEG:
Electroencephalograph, an instrument that detects, amplifies. and records electrical activity of the brain
EMG:
electromyograph, an instrument that detects, amplifies. and records electrical activity of the muscles
EOG:
electroocculograph, an instrument that detects, amplifies. and records electrical activity of the eyes
subjective reporting of consciousness:
sleep diary, self reporting, etc
circadian rhythm is:
a biological rhythm involving changes in our bodily functions or activities that occur within a duration of 24 hours
circadian rhythm is regulated by the:
Suprachiasmatic nucleus/ which releases melatonin
ultradian rhythm is:
a biological rhythm involving changes in bodily functions or activities occurring as part of a cycle shorter than 24 hours
nrem sleep is:
sleep characterised by non-rapid eye movement, 80% of sleep is nrem, muscles relax and body replenished, easily awakened. HAS 3 STAGES
rem sleep is:
sleep characterised by rapid eye movement, lasting about 10 minutes, paralysed, consolidates all learned info, brain is most active
sleep episode:
a full duration of time spent asleep
sleep onset:
the transition from being awake to asleep
sleep across the lifespan:
sleep changes as you get older
