CHAPTER 5 - memory Flashcards
memory is:
defined as the processing, storage, and retrieval of information acquired through learning
Atkinson shifrin model:
sensory info > sensory memory > spayed attention to into STM > encoded into LTM (and retrieved into) STM
sensory memory:
iconic (visual) OR echoic (auditory)
STM is:
defined as: the entry point of memory where new incoming sensory info is stored for a brief period
- when incoming sensory memory is paid attention to, it enters the STM
LTM is:
stores potentially limitless amounts of info for very long amounts of time for later retrieval
- either implicit (unconscious memory without awareness) OR explicit (memory with awareness & conscious retrieval)
memory and the brain:
long term memories are stored in many regions across the brain
role of cerebral cortex:
stores explicit semantic memories
role of neocortex:
stores explicit memories (with conscious retrieval)
role of hippocampus:
involved in encoding explicit memories from STM to LTM
role of amygdala:
retrieves explicit memories
role of basal ganglia:
encoding and storage of LT implicit memory
role of cerebellum:
temporarily stores implicit procedural memories
mnemonics are:
any technique used to assist your memory isa mnemonic, which uses info in LTM by making a link between new and old info
types of mnemonics:
acronym, acrostic, method of loci
method of loci:
items remembered and converted into mental representations associated with a specific location (in a sequence)
