Sexual identity
Biological sex of individuals
Physical identity
Belief a person has about his or her gender
Gender identity
Gender roles people adopt or adhere to on the basis of cultural norms for feminine and masculine behavior
Social sex role identity
Involving a person’s sexual and emotional attraction to members of the other and/or the same sex
Sexual orientation identity
Consists of sexual behavior, emotions, sexual fantasies, sexual attractions, social preference, living life as a heterosexual, bisexual, or gay or lesbian, and self-identification
Sexual orientation
Aesthetic, romantic, or sexual attraction to members of the opposite gender
Heterosexuality
Refers to an individual or a group of people who have same-sex feelings and behaviors and who identify with the gay community
Homosexuality
Aesthetic, romantic, or sexual attraction to members of either the same or the opposite gender
Bisexuality
Refers to an individual who is questioning his or her sexual orientation and/or gender identity
Questioning
A broad term that includes anyone who does not identify as heterosexual
Queer
An individual whose sexual and/or affectional attractions are not limited to what is based on gender identity or biological sex
Pansexual
Someone who identifies as primarily heterosexual, but may engage in limited situational same-sex sexual behavior yet does not identify as bisexual
Heteroflexible
Allows the LGB or questioning client to use a broader spectrum of emotional language to explore or accurately represent his or her experience of attraction
Affectional orientation
The oppression of LGBTQI individuals that involves prejudice and discriminatory behavior
Heterosexism
The internalization of society’s negative attitudes toward non heterosexuals
Internalized heterosexism
Fear and hatred of people who are LGBTQI
Homophobia
System of heterosexism confers unearned advantages onto heterosexual people
Heterosexual privilege
A federal statute that prohibits sex discrimination, including sexual harassment
Title IX
The process of disclosing one’s sexual orientation to others or the self-realization of an LGBTQI identity
Coming out
A cognitive bias that influences how we conclude who or what is responsible for an event
Attribution bias
Stress associated with being a member of an oppressed group
Minority stress
The institutional enforcement of heterosexuality as superior while denigrating homosexuality
Institutional heterosexism
Psychological approaches that aim to alter sexual orientation from LGB to heterosexual
