Zhou Dynasty
Began in the 1100’s BC
Lasted longer than any other dynasty
Zhou kings claimed to have the Mandate of Heaven

The idea that heaven gave power to the king and no one ruled without heaven’s permission

King - at the top
Lords - people of high rank who paid taxes and provided soldiers
Peasants - farmers at the bottom of the order

The ideas of Confucius
1. People should be respectful and loyal to family members
2. Leaders should be kind and lead by example
3. Learning is a process that doesn’t end
4. Heaven expects people to behave well and act morally
Daoism
Stressed living in harmony with the Dao - the guiding force of all reality
They wanted the government to stay out of people’s lives
Believed that the universe is a balance of opposites
Laozi
The most famous Daoist teacher
Taught that people should not try to gain wealth or seek power
Wrote the basic text of Daoism - The Way and Its Power
Legalism
The belief that people were bad by nature and needed to be controlled
Different from both Confucianism and Daoism
Why did many of the teachings of Confucius focus on the family
He believes that if you restore family order it would restore social harmony
