Chapter 6 - Respiratory System Flashcards
The Respiratory System
Also known as the pulmonary system, which brings oxygen into the lungs from the air it is breathed in and also removed CO2 from the lungs, into the air.
This system includes airways, lungs and the respiratory muscles.
Respiratory Pump
The skeletal bones and tissues/muscles working together to allow air to travel into the body and also blood to travel back to the heart.
Inspiration vs Expiration
Breathing is divided into phases.
Inspiration is inhaling.
Expiration is exhaling.
Valsalva maneuver
A process that involves expiring against a closed windpipe, creating additional intra-abdominal pressure and spinal stability.
Basically holding in a breath during an exercise while contracting the abdominals.
What are the 2 categories of the respiratory passages?
Conducting airways consist of all the structures through which air travels before entering the respiratory airways The nasal and oral cavities, mouth, pharynx, larynx, trachea, and bronchioles provide a gathering station for air and oxygen to be directed into the body. These structures also allow the incoming air to be purified, humidified (i.e., moisture added), and warmed or cooled to match body temperature
Respiratory airways collect the channeled air coming from the conducting airways.
Diffusion
The process of getting oxygen from the environment to the tissues of the body.
Tachypnea
Respiratory rate that is too fast; greater than 24 breaths per minute.
Bradypnea
Respiratory rate that is too slow; fewer than 8 breaths per minute.
Dyspnea
Shortness of breath or labored breathing.
Diaphragmatic breathing
Breathing deeply by allowing the expansion of the abdominal area.
A normal respiratory rate at rest is __ to ___ breaths per minute.
12 to 16
Oxygen Uptake
The use of oxygen by the body.
What is the primary role of the respiratory system?
To ensure proper cellular function.
