Whats the process of socialization?
Socialization is the process of passing on a culture’s ways of thinking and acting. This usually occurs during childhood, the process continues through adulthood. They learn through the assumptions by which parents and others treat children and adults.
How do we define children?
How we socialize children reflects what we expect of them and the values we place on them.In early years children were employed, they were expected to provide emotional satisfaction for the parents. Childhood came to be regarded as a special time.

How do parents act as the first socializers?
The number, marital status, sexual orientation and age of a childs parent figures help to shape the child, the interaction within families has a greater impact than does family structure
What are the roles of mothers and fathers?
Traditionally asymmetrical roles, increased participation by fathers, mothers still psychological parent
What are the different parenting styles?
Vary between demandingness and responsiveness Authoritarian Permissive Authoritative/democratic uninvolved
What are parenting methods?
Spanking is less effective
conflict between parents increases risk that children will have adjustment problems
parents yelling, name calling, threatening distresses children
How do siblings affect children?
Most children have at least one sibling, 2011: 45% with just on child, 385 with 2 and 16% with more than 3, sibling relationships are similar to peer relationships
Whats the affect of first born children?
First borns are advantaged, later borns spend less time with parents
Effects of childcare?
Young children in full-time childcare typically spend 9 hours a day 250 days a year away from their parents, the number of children in day care has increased, children in high quality care have better social skills and are ready for school
