Chapter 6: Process Selection And Facility Layout Flashcards
Process Selection
Refers to deciding on the way production of goods or service will be organized
Capital Intensity
The mix of equipment and labor that will be used by the organization
Process Flexibilit
The degree to which the system can be adjusted to change I processing requirements due to such factors as changes in product or service design, changes in volume processed, and changes in technology
Job Shop: High flexibility using general-purpose equipment Nd skilled workers
It is used when a low volume of high-variety goods or services will be needed. Processing is intermittent; work includes small jobs, each with somewhat different processing requirements
Batch
Processing is used when a moderate volume of goods or services is desired, and it can handle moderate variety in products or services
Repetitive (Assembly)
When Niger volumes of more standardized goods or services are needed, repetitive process is used
Continuous
When a very high volume of nondiscrete, highly standardized output is desired, continuous system is used
Project
A nonrepetitive set of activities directed toward a unique goal within a limited time frame
Layout
Refers to the configuration if departments, work centers, and equipment, with particular emphasis on movement of work (customers or materials) through the system
Product Layout
Layout that uses standardized processing operations to achieve smooth, rapid, high-volume flow
Production Line
Standardized layout arranged according to a fixed sequence of production tasks
Assembly Line
Standardized layout arranged according to a fixed sequence of assembly tasks
Process Layout (Functional Layout)
Layouts that can handle varied processing requirements
Intermittent Processing
Nonrepetitive processing
Fixed-Position Layout
Layout in which the product or project remains stationary, and workers, materials, and equipment are moved as needed
